Diversity ruled the 67th Grammy Awards.
Sandra Velasquez, founder of Latina beauty and personal care brand Nopalera – Happi’s January Indie Inc. spotlight – was there to witness the star-studded event. Her partner was nominated for Best Contemporary Classical Composition as part of the San Francisco Symphony Chorus & Orchestra.
“The biggest takeaway for me was how incredibly diverse the artists were and why this is exactly what makes music in America so good,” Velasquez said in a LinkedIn post. “The reason music is good is precisely because we have people from different backgrounds creating and expressing themselves. Diversity is what makes life exciting and rich. We inspire each other with our differences.”
Each of the stars’ unique looks (coupled with the latest color and hairstyle trends) were a vibrant reflection of that self-expression.
Happi has the breakdown of the hair, makeup and skin care products that made up some of the night’s brightest stars.
Celebrity hairstylist Evanie Frausto used Redken to achieve Best Pop Vocal Album Winner Sabrina Carpenter’s red carpet and stage performance.
Wearing a baby blue gown featuring feathers and pearls, Carpenter’s signature blonde locks were tousled in a French Twist.
Frausto said Carpenter shampooed and conditioned her hair using the Redken Acidic Bonding Concentrate Shampoo and Redken Acidic Bonding Concentrate Conditioner. After rinsing, Redken Quick Blowout was applied from root to ends for heat protection and smoothness. While her hair was damp, Redken Stay High Mousse was brushed through for even distribution. To add extra volume, Redken Root Lifter was applied at the crown.
For the blowout, L’Oréal Professionnel AirLight Pro was applied using a 1.25-inch metal round brush, setting the hair for maximum body and movement. Once the blowout was complete, she curled her hair with a one-inch iron, pinning each curl to set. As the curls cooled, she misted Redken Control Hair Spray all over for added hold.
After the curls had set, she took them down and brushed them out to create soft, effortless waves. Then, she styled a French twist at the back—keeping it polished, yet relaxed to highlight her highlight her open-back silhouette and diamond necklace.
For Carpenter’s performance look, Frausto refreshed her hair by lightly dampening it with water and a touch of Redken Quick Blowout. Then, she quickly dried it with hands using the L’Oréal Professionnel AirLight Pro to smooth out any kinks from being pinned up.
Once the hair was prepped, Frausto used a three-quarter-inch curling iron to curl the top section—setting it for added shape and movement. For the bottom half, she opted for a half-inch curling iron, creating extra bounce and volume at the ends. As the curls set, Frausto misted Redken Control Hair Spray throughout for hold before taking them down.
To enhance the texture, she applied Redken Dry Texture Spray giving the hair a soft, brushed-out, fluffy finish. Then, she locked in the look with another light mist of Redken Control Hair Spray and perfected her signature bangs.
Actress and “Wicked” star Cynthia Erivo wore Falscara Mocha Wisps, complimenting her mocha brown eye look, with a strong lip and glowing complexion.
“I’m always into tonal makeup, so I loved the idea!” said Celebrity Makeup Artist Joanna Simkin. “The warm browns not only enhanced Cynthia’s natural features, but also created a perfect harmony for her performance during the Quincy Jones tribute.”
Simkin used KISS Falscara Mocha Wisps, soft deep brown cluster lashes with a touch of volume and curl to create a warm gorgeous tonal brown look. To apply, Simkin brushed a light coat of Bond on the natural lashes, then used the applicator to take a wisp from the tray and gently place beneath the base of Erivo’s natural lashes, slightly away from the waterline. To finish the look, Simkin applied a thin coat of Seal under the wisps then applied pressure between Falscara wisps and the natural lash for an all-night hold.
KISS Falscara Mocha Wisps are touted as salon-style lash extensions that stay secure and comfortable for 24 hours or up to 14 days with the Overnighter. These stackable underlash clusters feature a unique flexible microband with featherlight fibers to create a seamless natural look and no damage to natural lashes.
Kim Gordon, legendary frontwoman of Sonic Youth and nominee of Best Alternative Music Album and Best Alternative Music Performance, rocked the Red Carpet in Laura Geller Beauty and Bliss.
“The look Kim was going for was based on her outfit,” Servin told Happi. “Her hairdresser, Paul Rizzo, suggested she wear the Vivienne Westwood horns, and her stylist, Turner, had styled her in a Celine tuxedo. The makeup needed to balance her look. It’s punk, there’s an edge, so that’s where the winged liner came into play. Fresh, glowing skin with an edgy liner. It’s also a go-to look for Kim and a staple of mine.”
Celebrity Makeup Artist Nichole Servin created a “no makeup,” makeup look to enhance the rocker’s natural beauty.
To prep Gordon’s skin, Servin applied Laura Geller’s Spackle Mist and Spackle Illuminating Undereye Primer; and Bliss’ Glow & Hydrate Serum, Drench & Quench, Bright Idea Eye Cream and Skin Smoothing Body Butter.
“As a woman in my late 40s and an esthetician first, right now, it is all about serums in skin care,” said Servin. “I love seeing serums in makeup because they keep the skin looking fresh and allow the makeup to enhance clean, glowing skin without causing the makeup to be noticed. Genius.”
For her face, she applied Better Than Block Serum Foundation in Light; Ideal Fix Concealer in Light; Italian Marble Bronzer Stick in Capri Coast; Serum Blush in Refreshing Rose; and Baked Blurring + Setting Powder in light/medium.
To “bring the drama” to Gordan’s eyes, Serin applied Sculpt-N-Stay Brow Pencil and Gel in Taupe; INKcredible Waterproof Gel Eyeliner Pencil in Blackbird; The Ultimate Palette; and Always There Waterproof Mascara.
On her lips, she used Modern Classic Lip Liner in “Sassy Spice” and Jelly Balm in “A Latte Love.”
